African American culture has formed in such a way that hair is consider almost part of who you are. What is it about black hair that makes it form the way it does?

Obviously a large part of the curly/kinky nature of black hair comes from roots in Africa. Many scientists believe that it was evolved as an evolutionary trait from the climate. It has been said that black hair is missing a chemical found in other races hair that cause it to form in the curly fashion that it does. Another cause comes from the actual shape of the hair. When looked at under a microscope you find that the shape of the hair is more flat. Just like taking a ribbon and running a pair of scissors along it, the hair curls.

Some that find it a curse often look for solutions to make their hair look more smooth and straight. That is where relaxing comes into play. Most of the time this is done with different chemicals. Although many try to remove the kink and relax their hair, there is also a strong natural hair movement in the African American community.

The natural movement encourages not using any chemicals or other relaxation technique. They encourage African Americans to be proud of their black hair. By growing out naturally, black hair has a lot of potential to be styled in numerous different ways.
